MacOS X Lion released

As many of you may know, Apple has released Mac OS X Lion which is the latest version of the Macintosh operating system for Apple computers.

Ivey IT is strongly recommending that Faculty and Staff do not upgrade their Ivey supplied Apple computer to Lion until we have completed testing of this new operating system to ensure it works properly with all of our systems.

We will send out another e-mail with more detailed information about Lion and the best way to upgrade after we have completed testing.

Internet Explorer 9 and eZone Compatibility

In early March 2011, Microsoft released the latest version of their Windows Internet browser, Internet Explorer 9. Although Windows Update will prompt you to install the update, there are a few known compatibility issues with Internet Explorer 9 and eZone (http://www.ivey.uwo.ca/ezone).

Faculty/Staff Not Using Internet Explorer 9

If you are prompted to install the IE9 update, click “Don’t Install”.  Ivey IT will be officially launching Internet Explorer 9 in Summer 2011.

If you are a using IE9, we recommend you:

  • Use eZone in Compatibility View by clicking the broken paper icon in the address bar:

or

  • Uninstall Internet Explorer 9 and use Internet Explorer 8. Please contact the IT Helpdesk for assistance uninstalling IE9.

Students Using Internet Explorer 9

Fake Microsoft Critical Security Update E-mail

A new fake Microsoft Critical Security Update e-mail has been reported in Ivey mailboxes. Please do not open the link in the e-mail. The program that the e-mail asks you to install contains a fake anti-virus program (Antivirus Pro 2010) that will ask for credit card information.

If you did click on the link and install the fake update, please contact the IT Helpdesk.

Summer Hours Begin May 2, 2011

Please be advised that effective May 2, 2011 the IT Helpdesk will be switching to summer hours.

Summer Business Hours:

  • Monday to Friday  8:00 am to 4:00 pm

After hours cell phone support (519-661-4196):

  • Monday to Friday 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm
  • Saturday and Sunday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Our Spencer location hours will not change and will remain 7:30 am to 3:00 pm Monday to Friday.

Duplex Printing – Ivey Student Printers

All Ivey Student Printers support duplex (double-sided) printing.

Windows 7 Instructions

-

Step 1: Enable the Duplex Option

** If you installed the printers after September 2010, this is already installed by default.

1.       Go to Start and select “Devices and Printers

2.       Double click on an Ivey printer and select “Customize your printer”.

3.       Select the “Device Settings” tab above

4.       Under “Installable Options” change the Duplex Unit (for 2-sided Printing) option to INSTALLED.

5.       Click OK

Repeat these steps for each Ivey printer.

Step 2: When you are Ready to Print

1.       In the Print dialog box for the printer you want to use select “Properties

2.       In the Properties dialog box, on the “Printing Shortcuts” tab, select Two-Sided (Duplex) Printing and select OK to print.

Mac OS X Instructions

When Student printers are installed, by default they have the option to print double-sided. To print a document double-sided, you must select that option before printing the document itself.

In your application, click “File” –> Select “Print

When the Print Menu appears, select the printer you wish to print to in the drop down menu

Under “Presets”, change selection from “Copies & Pages” to “Layout

In the “Layout” Menu, you will see a “Two-Sided” menu option, which by default will be set to “Off

Select either “Long-Edge binding” or “Short-Edge binding” (either one will work) and click Print

Using USB devices with VirtualBox and Windows 7

Resolving USB Device Installation and Performance Issues

Some USB 2.0 devices (printers, external hard drives, USB keys etc.) may not install correctly or perform as fast as expected on your VirtualBox Windows 7 machine.

To resolve installation and performance issues with your USB 2.0 devices and your Windows Virtual Machine in general:

  1. Quit VirtualBox: If you have VirtualBox open or your virtual machine running, fully quit the application first
  2. Upgrade your VirtualBox Software: Upgrade to version 4.0.4 by downloading and installing the software from http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.0.4/VirtualBox-4.0.4-70112-OSX.dmg
  3. Install the VirtualBox VM Expansion Pack: The expansion pack provides support for USB 2.0 devices.Download and save the VM VirtualBox Expansion Pack from http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.0.4/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.0.4-70112.vbox-extpack
    Double click the downloaded file. VirtualBox will open and prompt you to install the expansion pack.
  4. Update VirtualBox Guest Additions: Start your Windows 7 Virtual Machine.
    Go to “Devices” –> “Install Guest Additions”. Select “Run VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe” and follow-through the installation steps.

Using USB Devices within VirtualBox

To use a USB device within VirtualBox:

  1. Connect your USB device to your Mac
  2. On your Desktop, you will see an icon representing your mounted USB device
  3. Drag the mounted USB device icon on your Desktop to the trash to unmount the USB device
  4. In VirtualBox, select “Devices” –> “USB Devices” –> Your Device.
    Windows may take a few minutes to install your device driver before displaying the Auto Run window.

Server Maintenance – Saturday, January 29, 2011 from 9:00PM to 11:00PM

The Systems Architecture Group will be performing server updates on Saturday, January 29th. Please make note of the following:

Saturday January 29th from 9:00pm to 11:00pm  

Production Services that will be affected during this outage:
· H: and L: drive access 

· Printing

· Email Access

· Ivey VPN and remote access to servers (i.e. biz-research2, biz-support)

· Access to Ivey websites and online resources

· Access to Ivey Applications (i.e. Millennium, Great Plains, Maximizer, Grades, Iris, etc)

*Note* Not all services will be affected at once, but during this timeframe there will be points in time when a particular service or resource is unavailable.  We ask that you refrain from using any network or Ivey resources during this timeframe.  Please save and close any open files or programs prior to 9:00pm on Saturday January 29th.

OfficeScan Antivirus Upgrade for Faculty/Staff Windows Users – Restart Required

Ivey IT has deployed an upgrade to our Trend Micro OfficeScan client. For Windows users using UWO tagged computers, a message will appear by the clock when the update has finished installing:

You are required to restart your computer at a time that is convenient for you.

  • Windows 7 users may receive a message stating that two or three antivirus programs are running. Restarting your computer will resolve this conflict.
  • Mac OS X users are not affected by this upgrade.

Brief Network Outages Possible – January 11 – 13, 6AM – 8AM

UWO ITS will be replacing the network switches for the next three mornings in the Ivey building.   You may notice brief network outages Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week between 6 am and 8 am.

If your connection drops, it should automatically re-connect within 5 minutes. If it does not automatically reconnect, please contact the IT Centre for assistance.  The outages may occur on Desktop computers (wired), or Laptops (wireless), in the main Ivey building;  Spencer and other Ivey locations are not affected.
